HY Architects’ work at San Rafael High School includes the design of a new, 30,000 SF STEAM classroom building that supports interdisciplinary learning and hands-on exploration. The facility was developed as part of the district-wide modernization effort and reflects the district’s commitment to 21st century learning.
The new STEAM building includes a variety of specialized spaces such as a physics academy, science and engineering labs, a fabrication laboratory/maker space, and digital arts and music composition labs. Additional program elements include a ceramics studio, woodshop, 3D printer and plasma cutter rooms, general classrooms, and an outdoor arts patio.
Designed to complete the new front face of the campus, the building connects to the adjacent student commons and existing science building, and opens onto a new student gathering plaza. Glass walls throughout the facility allow visibility into STEAM activities, promoting engagement and curiosity among the broader student body.
