Hibser Yamauchi Architects was responsible for expanding this urban campus to provide much-needed play and specialty classroom space. This new multi-purpose building incorporates a full-size basketball court as well as a stage and lighting associated to school performances and graduations. The classroom component serves the need for both art and music creating a true multi-purpose complex for the school. Outdoor features of the project include a learning area and amphitheater and short track and turf area for PE uses. The existing stream that underlies the site was referenced in patterns in the new site layout and parking. The building was designed to Collaborative for High Performance Schools Standards and incorporated unique lighting and daylighting devices for reducing energy consumption. After years of use, the principal is quoted as saying that incoming students “are awed by the [gymnasium] space when they first walk in.” This is a special place for learning!
